Local guide
Bletchley Driving Test Centre.
A local instructor's guide to test routes, parking, the manoeuvres examiners use, and the tricky spots to practise before your big day.
Where is the test centre?
Bletchley Driving Test Centre, Ashurst Close, Bletchley, Milton Keynes MK1 1HL. It's tucked just off the V7 Saxon Street and a short drive from Buckingham, making it the closest practical test centre for most of my learners.
Parking and arriving at the centre
- Arrive 10 minutes early — late arrivals can lose their slot and their fee.
- The centre has a small car park used by examiners and learners. Reverse into a bay so you can pull out forward at the end of the test.
- The waiting room is small. Bring your provisional licence — no licence, no test.
What test routes look like
The DVSA no longer publishes official routes, but after years of taking learners to Bletchley I know examiners draw from the same local network. Expect a mix of:
- Milton Keynes grid roads (V and H roads) at 60–70 mph
- Bletchley residential streets with parked cars
- Multi-lane roundabouts on the A5 and A421
- Dual carriageway driving with lane changes
- A quieter side road for the emergency stop (about 1 in 3 tests)
- Around 20 minutes of independent driving following a sat nav
Manoeuvres you might be asked to do
One manoeuvre is chosen at random. Examiners at Bletchley regularly use the test centre car park for bay parking.
- Parallel park at the side of the road
- Pull up on the right, reverse two car lengths, rejoin traffic
- Forward bay park (and reverse out) — common at the test centre car park
- Reverse bay park into a marked space
Tricky spots locals know about
Standing Way (A421) roundabouts
Multi-lane roundabouts with fast-moving traffic. Examiners often use these to check lane discipline and signalling. Practise approaching in the correct lane well in advance.
Watling Street / Buckingham Road junction
Busy mini-roundabout chain. Easy to misjudge priority — keep moving, but be ready to yield to traffic already on the roundabout.
Saxon Street grid roads
Milton Keynes' grid system has long stretches at the national speed limit (70 mph dual carriageway sections drop to 60/70). Examiners check that you make safe, decisive progress.
Queensway and Bletchley town centre
Narrow lanes, parked cars, pedestrian crossings and bus stops. Good place to practise meeting traffic and emerging from side roads.
Independent driving via sat nav
Around 20 minutes of your test will be sat-nav-led. Practise following directions on the grid roads without panicking if you take a wrong turn — examiners don't mark you down for that.
Top tips from a local instructor
- • Get at least a few lessons covering Bletchley test routes before booking.
- • Practise the test centre's bay parking — it's the most common manoeuvre here.
- • Don't rush the grid roads. Make safe, steady progress instead.
- • If you make a small mistake, move on. Most learners pass with a few minors.
- • Have a mock test a week before the real thing to settle the nerves.
